Pub Culture

The pub isn't where you go. It's where you end up.

In Dublin, the pub is a social institution older than the state itself. The Cobblestone in Smithfield starts its trad session at 9PM — no stage, no PA, just musicians who've been playing together for 30 years pulling out their fiddles. You'll be two pints in before you realise you've been there three hours.

Parade Day

March 17th, 2026. Theme: Roots.

The parade starts at Granby Row at noon. 3,000 participants, 12 floats, eight American marching bands — Ohio, Arizona, Illinois. Grand Marshal: Vogue Williams. It runs down O'Connell Street, over the bridge, south through the city. You want a balcony. Trust us. You want to be above the crowd when the first float turns the corner.

The Countryside

Connemara. The part of Ireland that looks fake.

Drive two and a half hours west from Dublin and the country changes register entirely. Stone walls, turf smoke, Atlantic light that shifts every twenty minutes. Doolin has three pubs and one of the best trad sessions in Ireland. The Cliffs of Moher are 45 minutes north. This is the part of the trip you'll be describing to people for the next decade.

"I've been saying 'I'll do a real St. Patrick's Day in Dublin someday' since I was 22. I'm 34. Pilgrimage made me stop saying someday. The parade balcony was the moment I understood what my grandmother was always talking about."
